Revenge evictions banned

“Revenge evictions” have finally been banned today after a long campaign by the Liberal Democrats.

The law will make any eviction illegal where it comes after the tenant has made a complaint about housing conditions that the landlord did not respond to satisfactorily. Previously 200,000 renters faced this type of ‘revenge’ eviction every year, according to research by Shelter.

We started the campaign to ban these types of evictions back in 2014, with Sarah Teather and Tim Farron leading a campaign in Parliament, but sadly it was prevented from coming to a vote at the time by two Conservative MPs. However, Liberal Democrat members of the House of Lords were successfully able to get this reform into another law in March.

This is significant news for renters and the vast majority of landlords who are angered by the unacceptable behaviour of a few rogue landlords. The Liberal Democrats are making housing our number one priority and we will fight for decent and affordable homes for all who need them.

Lib Dem Leader Tim Farron has said, “We must not tolerate this as a society – everyone deserves to have a safe place to live and evicting a family because they’ve asked for an electricity, gas or environmental hazard to be addressed is outrageous.”
