New ban on letting agents’ fees

by Wimbledon Town & Dundonald Lib Dems on 8 April, 2017

After the news that the Government is consulting on banning letting agents’ fees, housing campaigner Anthony Fairclough reports back:

“Renters will hopefully soon be able to move home without paying rip-off letting agents’ fees, following a successful campaign by the Lib Dems in Parliament to make renting fairer. These fees are often as much as £500.

“I used to rent in Wimbledon, so I know how difficult it is to get a foot on the housing ladder. Trying to save for a deposit is impossible if you’re hit by huge letting fees if you need to move”.

Labour Council bosses are failing renters.

We have recently uncovered that Merton Council:

  1. Hasn’t even looked at the idea of a licensing scheme for landlords.
  2. Failed to prosecute any rogue landlords for providing unsafe accommodation in the last year.
  3. Only secured about 10% ‘affordable’ homes in developments in the last year – despite their own 40% target – making it more difficult for people to get on the housing ladder.
