Graham Road construction works – 9 month review

by Wimbledon Town & Dundonald Lib Dems on 26 May, 2021

The Dundonald ward councillors attended a meeting on Monday night with the Council on their review of the closure of Graham Road for the hotel construction works. You may remember that they had agreed to do this 9 months into the building works.

The Council officers feel that it would be dangerous to have cranes lifting frames over nearby roads as they build higher. And in their eyes that means the safest thing to do is to allow Barnes Construction to continue this work from Graham Road – meaning the road closure will stay in place for a while longer. In 3-4 months there will be a further review, where it’s expected that the Portakabins will be moved from the road to on site. The Council were keen to emphasise this was an ongoing conversation and not a one-off decision.

We didn’t get too much detail, but there is also a new working group between the Council, Transport for London and construction companies on issues around and lessons for future building projects of similar scales.

The Council have agreed to distribute a newsletter with more information about their approach to this decision, and we are broadly confident that they will agree to a public meeting to discuss their reasoning with residents directly.

Will share more info when we have it.

Graham Road should remain a cul-de-sac for vehicles.. Graham Road continues to have walking, bike, push chair access to the 4 corners of the compass.

The cul-de-sac makes Graham Road a more environmentally road and a more pleasant place to live in

This is a VERY BAD idea. the constant traffic in this road with a turning circle at one end with lorries and delivery vans makes it more dangerous. You can get caught behind a van or lorry for a very long time either trying to leave or to get back home. If a resident cannot find a parking space, it means coming al the way down the road and then turning round going all the way back and then trying to park in an adjacent road. Coming back late at night or with shopping is even worse. I would never have chosen to live in a cul-de-sac road and to have one thrust upon me would make me deeply unhappy.
