Flooding in July and August

by Wimbledon Town & Dundonald Lib Dems on 26 September, 2021

The impact of climate change is clear for all to see. Take the floods we’ve had after heavy rain, multiple times every year since 2016.

To tackle that we need real action, at all levels – individual, local and national.

There’s also things that can be done to reduce the chance of flooding here where we live:

  • The Government should change the responsibilities placed on water companies and the Environment Agency. The Conservative Government should task them to respond to today’s world – not the weather from 30 years ago. Sign our petition.
  • Local drains and gullies should be kept clean and free-flowing. Labour council bosses should do more to hold their contractor to account. Report blocked drains and flooding here.
  • People should always complain directly to the water company when there’s flooding – you might get money off, but more importantly you’d stop them hiding behind the argument that there’s no problems here. Report flooding to Thames Water here.

At the Council meeting in September, local Liberal Democrat councillors:

  1. Held Council bosses to account on action they’d taken since flooding in July and August: watch the video of Cllr Simon McGrath here.
  2. Highlighted we need real action, not attempts to shoehorn all the blame onto the Council: watch the video of Cllr Fairclough highlighting key issues here.
  3. Challenged the Council to act on the climate emergency by moving investments out of fossil fuel companies: watch the video here and find out more info here.
