12 storey building in Wimbledon town centre

by Wimbledon Town & Dundonald Lib Dems on 5 February, 2022

Re: Application for 12 storey/53m tall building in Wimbledon town centre

You might know that this Thursday, the Council’s planning application committee will be asked to give permission to a huge new building.

The site is St George’s House East, which currently houses Pret, Little Waitrose and Starbucks on the ground floor. The proposal is for a 12 storey building, 53 metres high.

This will dwarf all the surrounding buildings. The nearby 20 St George’s is 38m tall. This, by comparison, would be almost as tall as the 17 storey Collier’s Wood Tower (54.5m), and taller than Merton Civic Centre in Morden (45m).

This is a very major development in the heart of Wimbledon, which will set the benchmark for future applications for very tall buildings in the area.

In 2020, Liberal Democrat councillors tried to make a simple change to plan for Wimbledon town centre to reflect residents’ real opposition inappropriately tall buildings. Sadly Labour and Conservative councillors failed to back this change – more info on our website here.

We are concerned that some people may still not be aware of this very significant application. You can look at plans on Merton Council’s online planning explorer, using the reference number 21/P3163.

There’s some information from the developer here.

You can email the members of the planning committee directly using their contact details which are here.
